Poker Table Etiquette for Online Poker Players

Poker etiquette includes everything having to deal with the way the game is to be played so that it maintains a healthy game spirit environment. Just like you have your dining table manners, you have to follow the poker table manners too so that you do not end up being kicked out from the table. Remember poker is game for the sole purpose of fun and entertainment and do not treat it as a money-making option. Poker table etiquettes are to be followed so that your gaming surrounding remains assertive, other players are not treated to be inferior and also so that there is no foul play.

Here are a few do’s and don’ts while playing online poker:

Do not disclose your fellow players cards while the game is going on and you are or not in the hand. Doing this is totally unethical as per the poker rules. Do not influence others to fold or call by telling them what the other players may have. Just stick to your game and your cards. Let others decide what they want to play. Think about it, if you were playing against a weak player and that player keeps calling you and when you have made a winning hand some other player on the table asks the weak player to fold by disclosing your cards, how would you feel? Similarly, don’t spoil the fun for others too.

The time period allotted to you for making a decision at the table is sufficient for you to act. Avoid unnecessarily delaying it or buying time for each hand just to bug the other players, especially at the pre-flop. It is understood that at flop and onwards you need to think what cards your opponent could have. Taking time then is ok but try to play within the given time.

Using any kind of profanity or abusive language is a strict offense on the poker table. By doing this you may induce the other player to leave the table and never play again by leaving on him a negative image about the game. Many online poker sites provide you with a chat section which is to maintain friendly relation and interaction with your fellow players. Do not misuse it by teasing other players. Also, many players use it as a promotion activity, where they play on one site and talk about other sites. Remember this is a chat option provided for friendly interaction about the game and not promoting other sites. You can use the forums for the same.

Also, do not disclose your hand before the game is over. Either it is a sign of boasting or manipulating others to change their decision. As said earlier let each player decide what he wants to play. You don’t decide for him. If you want the others to know what you had, you can disclose your cards during showdown but not before that. If you talk about your cards before showdown, which may be true or false, will lead other players to take decision on the basis of your cards. This is an unethical way of playing the game.

Group playing is also observed at the online poker tables so as to play against one player and steal his chips. This is totally against the rules of poker and is considered as a case of cheating. Group playing with the use of a cell phone is also not permitted.

These are some of the poker table etiquettes which one must observe and abide by to play the game with complete fairness and in an ethical manner.

balancing poker and lifeexactly a profession.

This makes the topic a sensitive issue for discussion for poker players who are striving on a daily basis to maintain a balance between their lives as poker players and their lives outside the game. Maintaining the optimum poker-life balance is not as easy as it looks in the movies. It is hard work. However, if you manage to pull it off, then there is nothing more rewarding and fulfilling.

This article discusses how to balance poker with family, your significant other and with your studies (if you are a student).

Poker and Studies

If you are a student at a university or college and play poker as well, then maintaining a balance between your love for the game and studying to make your future is very critical. Getting carried away playing poker and ignoring studies is, to put simply, bad.

It is always apt to divide your time such that you dedicate more hours to studying than playing poker. If there’s an important assignment that needs completion or an exam that is coming up, then that should get higher priority.

Think of it this way, the degree that you receive will give you a secure backing. Once you are set, nobody will stop you from becoming a poker pro if you want to. Also don’t forget to have a life outside the books and the poker table. Go out with your friends, make NEW friends, get a hobby. Live your life to the fullest.

Poker and your Significant Other

With your partner, it is crucial that you devote as much time to them, and preferably more, than you do to poker. Maintaining this balance is very important, otherwise it can threaten the stability of the relationship.

Involvement

There are some ways in which you can do this. If your partner is not entirely over the moon about your poker playing, then introduce them to the game. Once they are familiar with the game, then maybe some of their preconceived notions may break. However, if you plan to teach your partner poker yourself, then keep in mind that you will need to be patient, understanding and need to give them their own time to learn. Plus, the dynamics of your relationship are not that of a typical student-teacher. So it’s best to start them off with some self-learning and then let them ease into the game.

Communication

Another way to avoid arguments and have your partner resent poker and your playing is to communicate. Maintain an open and honest dialog about your playing. This means informing your partner about your wins and losses, letting them know where you are and when you will be home, answering your phone and NOT using poker as a way of negotiation (I will come with you now, but then I’m going to the game tomorrow night). Do not forget important dates, occasions and honour the commitments that you make. Sometimes, it may be tempting to stay on in a game because a fish has come in or you are losing and want to make up, but know when to stop. It will need mental strength, but you must do it.

Compartmentalization

Compartmentalize your day for your poker playing time and that which you spend with your partner. If you have a bad day at the table, then blow off some steam before you go back home. Don’t go dumping your frustration on your partner. This will just cause more resentment and anger, which is detrimental to any relationship in the long term. Your partner will feel like they have made some mistake, or like you are bringing too much negativity into the relationship.

The same goes for your family and friends. Make time, compartmentalize, honour your commitments and communicate. People cannot understand unless you talk to them.

These were some tips to maintain a balance between life and playing poker. This does not apply just to live poker players, but for online poker too. This balance will ensure that you get the best of both worlds. You can enjoy a good run in poker and a positive and loving relationship with your close ones.

What would be the right attire for a poker game? Of course a live poker tournament; it doesn’t matter in online poker. You can even play online while taking a shower for all anyone cares. However, when playing live games, you are among other people who can see you, and so following social norms is important. Spoiler alert for all you rebels out there.

So to start with, there is really no dress code in place for poker tournaments; at least not at the moment. Which means that you can wear just about anything you want. However, don’t forget the social norms. So even though you can wear clothes of your choice to a poker game, make sure that they are at least not offensive to those around you.

The basics of poker attire and ettiquettes –

Be comfortable

Whatever you decide to wear, make sure that it is comfortable. Live poker tournaments go on for hours with small and few breaks. You are going to be glued to your chair for hours. If your attire is comfortable, then you will be able to focus on playing and winning.

It doesn’t matter how many people look at you. That’s not what you’re there for (most of you, anyway). The main agenda is playing and winning, and clothes that are too tight, too hot to sit in, too itchy or that cause some other form of physical discomfort are only going to distract you. So dress in clothes that you ‘know’; a poker game is the wrong place for wardrobe experiments.

Look presentable

Okay, so you have decided to wear your lucky T-shirt that you’ve had for a decade now, or your boyfriend’s old jeans that you really love, go ahead. But please, for the love of the game, be neat. Looking as if you’ve just crawled out of bed and onto your seat, or worse still like you rode a tornado to the casino, isn’t going to help your reputation.

Your game may be the best, but the first impression is going to be of someone who doesn’t care about personal hygiene, looks like they smell and don’t give a crap about the people they are going to be playing with. Sure, you really may not give a crap, but there’s no harm in looking at least ‘not-homeless’ for nicety’s sake.

Maintain hygiene

Some players have had horrendous experiences of other players’ body odour. Feet slowly stinking up the table from underneath like tear gas is not a pleasant experience for anyone. At all. If you are someone who prefers to remove their shoes and sit, then wear socks. Opt for shoes that are easy to slip on and off, don’t give you blisters and don’t hurt your feet. Sitting in painful shoes all day is frankly unnecessary. And also, avoid slippers and overgrown toenails. Carry a body spray along too, if the casino is hot and you tend to sweat. Always best to be prepared, right?

Sharp dressing has drawbacks too

Wearing a suit or dress to a game will surely create an image of you as a person who takes their appearance seriously and is particular about it. People will take you for a serious player too. However, this attire is difficult to upkeep. Poker tournaments last for days on end, many hours a day. Maintaining a sharp appearance will become tiring after a point. Try to opt for looks that are classy and sophisticated yet easy to maintain.

Some basic essentials to have

It’s always a good idea to carry a backpack with all your essentials. You never know what you might suddenly need. Carry a jacket with you. Sometimes, the outside heat may cause the interiors of the casino to be freezing. Wear a breathable shirt and take your jacket along. That way, you won’t be melting, but neither will you be freezing into a block of ice.

Energy drinks and maybe some snacks are necessary to keep up your energy. Also, if you are on any medications, carry those and a bottle of water as well. Glares and hoodies are a personal choice, up to every individual player.

It is safe to say that the best attire for a poker game would be a pair of jeans and a T-shirt, or a comfy dress or long shorts. Revealing, uncomfortable and scruffy clothes are a no. Sharp suits and dresses are good too if you have the patience to maintain the look throughout. Sneakers and sandals work best, and shoes that hurt the feet in any way should be avoided as far as possible. Now get your head out of your wardrobe and go play some poker!
