February 2016: The online poker website PokerStars hosted a poker tournament online on October 5th, 2015. It has now entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest online poker tournament ever to be hosted, with 253,692 people who played. This number has surpassed the total population of small countries like Samoa, San Marino and Tonga.
This isn’t the first time PokerStars has made this record, though. They have done it once before, in 2008, when more than 35,000 players registered for their $11 event. From that to more than quarter of a million players in seven years is a commendable feat. There was a micro-stakes series with less than $1 buy-ins and massive payouts as one of the formats.
Owing to this, thousands of players registered on the site days before the tournament was scheduled to kick off. As ambitious as it was, PokerStars had not planned every little detail of this magnanimous event, but left it to the players. From the looks of it, they got truly lucky.

Some of the high stakes events include the €2,200 High Roller, the King’s Casino €5,300 Super High Roller and the €330 Rozvadov Cup, which has a guarantee of €100,000. Other events include the €70 King’s Local Championship with a €15,000 guaranteed prize pool and the €60 Eureka Locals NL Hold’em Deepstack EPT Edition with a €7,000 guarantee.
There will also be ring games of various stakes running for 24 hours a day. This year’s Eureka Poker Tour is touted to break last year’s record of 644 players. Last year, Austrian Raphael Wimmer emerged winner with €99,685 in winnings.
February 2016: The Sphinx Club in Washington DC recently hosted ‘Chance for Life’, an event that supports a very noble cause – research for finding a cure to paediatric cancer. The proceeds from this event went to Alex’s Lemonade Stand, an organization that collects funds for research to fight childhood cancer.
Alex’s Lemonade Stand was started by Alex Scott at the age of four. She was a neuroblastoma patient. She started selling lemonade at her stand to collect money and donate it to doctors so that they could help more kids like her, until she passed away at the age of 8, after which her cause was taken up by her parents.
The ‘Chance for Life’ event hosted Sphinx Club’s 11th Annual Poker Tournament, Wine and Chef’s Tasting and Dance Party. The event managed to raise a staggering amount of over $150K. Chance for Life was created by RedPeg Marketing CEO Brad Nierenberg for his goddaughter Kennedy Snyder, who was diagnosed with cancer at the age of two, and fought through it.
The winner of the poker tournament was NFQllc.com’s CEO Richard Wiedis. In the first decade of its inception, Chance for Life has managed to raise over $1 million for paediatric cancer research.
